JD Vance sounds like the average non-white South African, repeating familiar talking points that blame people who possess skills for taking jobs away from those who lack them, rather than confronting the structural deficiencies that produce the skills gap in the first place.
This is emblematic of South Africa’s descent along a pernicious and destructive path, shaped by the narcissism inherent in white supremacy, the ideological force that underpinned colonialism and continues to inform imperialist culture. Throughout history, this culture has manifested in the persistent impulse to blame the non-European for problems rooted in deeper structural and historical realities.
Yet today, some non-white populations in Southern Africa appear increasingly comfortable donning the tattered robes of imperialism. To what end? That is the question.
Is it ideological alignment, political expediency, or a willingness to serve as proxies for external interests at the expense of African sovereignty? At its most troubling, this raises the prospect of a fifth column: actors who, wittingly help perpetuate the very structures of domination from which Africa has struggled to emancipate itself.
White supremacy and imperialism have shaped historical systems of power, yet some of their victims in Southern Africa appear ready to reproduce those very structures, potentially serving interests that undermine African sovereignty.
Paradoxically, they advance their arguments under the pretext of defending sovereignty, a concept whose prevailing institutional architecture they neither designed nor historically controlled, yet whose legitimacy they invoke through Eurocentric interpretations of the Westphalian state system. The irony is that this is unfolding at precisely the moment when the world, in part through South Africa’s own agency, is engaged in defining the principles, norms and institutions of an emerging multipolar order.
The fundamental question, therefore, is whether the sovereignty they claim to defend amounts to genuine African strategic autonomy or merely the preservation of a colonial inheritance, sustained by the very intellectual and institutional frameworks through which imperial power has historically been exercised.
Therefore the question is: If African political agency reproduces the logic of imperial dependence, what, ultimately, has independence delivered?
Freedom is not free. Not yet Uhuru!
